Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women (formerly Women’s Opportunity Awards)

Live Your Dream AwardsThe Live Your Dream Awards program is Soroptimist's major project. Through the program, clubs in 19 countries and territories assist women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Each year, more than $1.7 million is disbursed through cash awards at various levels of the organization. Recipients of these awards—many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol abuse—may use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare and transportation.

Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Only residents of Soroptimist International of the Americas' 19 member countries and territories are eligible to apply.

Since the Live Your Dream Awards program began in 1972, more than $30 million has been disbursed to help tens of thousands of women achieve their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families.

Application and two references are due November 15th.

2016 Live Your Dream Awardee:  Natalie

Natalie's goal and passion is to become a drug and alcohol counselor. As a former addict fully recovered, she understands how addiction can not only corrupt mental and physical health, but damage important relationships. She is currently enrolled at the College of Southern Nevada and working towards an Associates of Arts in Psychology. From there she will pursue a Bachelors of Psychology at UNLV. A single mother, Natalie works full time but knows anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

2015 Live Your Dream Awardee:  Shantel

Shantel is a unique young woman whom we can proudly say is one of ours. She is currently attending UNLV in the school of Social Work. Her career goals are unique and centered on youth in foster care. She feels this sometimes neglected population needs someone to fight for them and advocate for their future. Shantel obtained her AA from a Junior College and she is proud of the fact that she is the first one from her family to graduate, She was accepted into UNLV with a 3.0 GPA. She cites her grandmother as the main influence in her growing up years but her grandmother’s illness forced her into foster care which is the reason for her passion for helping these children.

Her six year old daughter is the pride of her life. We’ll close with a nice quote from her application, “ Most people who come from broken homes and homelessness give up and never take back their dreams. I did.”
